Objective: 

To introduce the students to the origin and basics of classical dance, its importance
and relevance in today’s society.
To teach and make the students learn the basic concepts of kathak dance to build their
foundation strong through Natyashastra.
To familiarize the students with the history, differences and similarities between
various other classical dance forms.
To make the students learn about the importance of ghunghroos in classical dance.
To discuss with the students about the various gharanas of kathak.
To skill the students with the concept of notation in kathak dance.

Unit I: 
नृत्य कला, नृत्य की उत्पत्ति कथा। भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्यों के प्रकार (कथक, भरतनाट्यम, कथकली, कुचिपुड़ी, मणिपुरी, मोहिनीअट्टम एवं उड़िसी)
Unit II: 
कथक नृत्य में प्रयुक्त होने वाले पारिभाषिक शब्द - ताल, मात्रा, लय, सम, ताली, खाली, ठेका, ठाह (बराबर), दुगुन, चौगुन, आवर्तन, पल्टा, पढन्त, गत, टुकड़ा, सलामी, आमद, चाल, बाँट, तत्कार असंयुक्त हस्त मुद्राएँ - पताका, त्रिपताका, अर्धपताका, कर्तरीमुख, मयूर, अ
Unit III: 
घुँघरूओं की विशेषता व महत्व। घरानों की जानकारी (लखनऊ, जयपुर, बनारस)। प्त्येक घरानों के प्रमुख कलाकारों के नाम।
Unit IV: 
ताल त्रिताल, ताल झपताल की ठाह (बराबर) दुगुन, चौगुन को ताललिपि में लिखने का अभ्यास। ठेका - दादरा, कहरवा
Unit V: 
जीवनी - पं. नारायण प्रसादजी, पं. जयलालजी सीखे हुए बोलो को लिपिबद्ध करना।
