Objective: 

This course will enable the students to get an understanding of the origin of theatre in India through study of Natyashastra – the Puncham Ved. Students will also get knowledge about regional forms of Indian origin.

Origin and Development of Indian Theatre

• Study of Natyashastra – Bharat Muni, Theatre the Indian Way, Brief study of Art of Acting, Stage Instruments
• Brief Study of Indian Theatre Organisations – Cultural Ministry, Sangeet Natak Academy and National School of Drama.

• Ras theary in Natyashastra
• Types of Ras – shringar, hansya, karuna, rodra, veer, bhyanak, vibhitsa, adabhut and shant .

Emerging Theatre Forms

• Street Play – emergence, need, essentials, difference between street play and stage play, major artists of India
• Mime - emergence, need, essentials, major artists of India

Folk Theatre

• Tamasha – State of origin, history, relevance in today’s time
• Nautanki - State of origin, history, relevance in today’s time
• Khayal - State of origin, history, relevance in today’s time
